No presente trabalho, investigamos a leitura da alteridade ameríndia nas obras de André Thevet e Jean de Léry a partir da intersecção entre suas experiências na França Antártica (1555-1560) e no cenário político-religioso da França da segunda metade do século XVI. Buscamos compreender os desdobramentos das Guerras de Religião (1562-1598) na construção de uma memória da França Antártica no interior da qual ambos os autores realizam traduções religiosas dos costumes, rituais e mitos dos Tupinambá que contribuem para a redução do Novo ao Velho Mundo e, mais especificamente, a inserção da humanidade selvagem numa História Universal. Por conseguinte, avaliamos os efeitos teológico-políticos das versões divergentes de Thevet e de Léry quanto à origem dos selvagens e ao sentido histórico do descobrimento das Índias Ocidentais.

In this study, we investigate the reading of Amerindian otherness in the works of André Thevet and Jean de Léry taking into account the intersection between their experiences in France Antarctique (1555-1560) and the political and religious setting of France in the second half of the sixteenth century. We seek to understand the developments of the Wars of Religion (1562-1598) to build a memory of France Antarctique. In this process, both authors perform religious translations of Tupinambás customs, rituals and myths which contribute to the reduction of the New to the Old World and, more specifically, to the insertion of an indigenous humanity into World History. Thereafter, we evaluate the theological-political effects of Thevets and Lerys divergent versions of the origin of the indigenous people, on the one side, and of the historical sense of the discovery of the West Indies, on the other.
