A presente dissertação busca apurar os nexos entre o pensamento geográfico e as concepções racialistas manifestas no Século das Luzes, por intermédio do estudo detalhado da série de mapas murais confeccionada e publicada por Sébastian-G. Longchamps e Jean Janvier em Paris, no ano de 1754. A investigação se detém nas estratégias de discriminação contra pessoas negras, especialmente por considerar os sucessivos edits, déclarations e ordonnances criados para regulamentar a prática da escravidão na França e nas suas colônias. A reconstituição do círculo social e da carreira dos geógrafos, bem como dos contextos de produção e consumo de suas obras sugere importantes indícios para a pesquisa. Deste modo, pretende-se demonstrar como as relações entre as linguagens constitutivas destes artefatos expressaram esquemas mentais socialmente partilhados às vésperas da edição da Encyclopédie dirigida por Diderot e d'Alembert. Tais conexões permitem refletir sobre o papel dos mapas murais em dois aspectos: como suporte do imaginário geográfico racializado e como representação capaz de impulsionar a propaganda do império marítimo francês em suas disputas pelo comércio transoceânico e domínio dos estabelecimentos nas Américas

The present dissertation investigates the connections between geographical thought and the racialist conceptions manifested in the Enlightenment Century, through a detailed study of the series of wall maps made in Paris by Sébastian-G. Longchamps and Jean Janvier, in 1754. The examination tries to identity the discriminations strategies against black peoples, especially because considers the successive edits, déclarations and ordonnances created for regulate the slaves' practices in France and in their colonies. A reconstitution of the social circle and of geographers' carriers, as well as the production and consumption contexts of his works suggest important evidences for the research. Taking this historical frame, we try to demonstrate the constitutive languages of these artifacts and how they share the social mental schemes on the eve of the publication of the Encyclopédie directed by Diderot and d'Alembert. This nexus allowed us to think about the role of wall maps in two aspects: as a support for the racialized geographic imaginary and as a representation capable of boosting the propaganda of the French maritime empire in its disputes over transoceanic commercial trade and to impose its colonial rule in the Americas
