Abstract in English
The objective of this work is to investigate the disquiet, to determine its specificities and to establish its relation with the experience of modernity. Through a critical reading of Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet and José Saramago's Baltasar and Blimunda, we sought to identify the literary forms that gave expression to the feeling under study. The present dissertation explores some of the recurring themes employed in the representation of disquiet, such as: identity, memory, belonging, conscience, intellectual work, and above all, the crisis situation permeating all these elements. The research corroborates the notion that mechanisms of language directly influence the way a feeling is conveyed. Thus, we identify that strangeness, humor, parody, irony, allegory and carnivalization are strategies that define modern sensibility. Disquiet appears in under the figures of exile, nostalgia, fragmented consciousness and mutilated identity, always bringing a rupture that destabilizes the nexus of meaning established between experience and expectation.
