Durante os primeiros reinados da Dinastia de Avis, o poder régio em Portugal deparou-se com a necessidade de criar estratégias que pudessem mitigar as origens inortodoxas do primeiro monarca avisino - D. João I - e, também, amainar o impacto de sua ascensão ao trono através da Revolução de 1383-1385. Diversas medidas com tal finalidade foram tomadas e, entre elas, o casamento de D. João I com a princesa inglesa D. Filipa de Lencastre e a produção institucional de um discurso legitimador sob ordem e encomenda da Coroa. Esta tese, portanto, busca analisar o papel de D. Filipa de Lencastre no processo de legitimação da Dinastia de Avis, tanto como agente política do governo durante seu reinado com D. João I quanto como representação na Chancelaria Régia e nas Crônicas Régias. Visamos assim cooperar na reformulação das perspectivas historiográficas que desconsideram o poder e a agência sociopolítica das mulheres, colaborando assim com o esforço rumo a uma História mais igualitária.

During the early reigns of the Avis Dynasty, the royal power in Portugal was faced with the need to devise strategies that could mitigate the unorthodox origins of the first avisan monarch - King John I - and could also soften the impact of his rise to the throne through the Revolution of 1383-1385. Several measures have been taken to this end, including the marriage of King John I to the English princess Philippa of Lancaster and the institutional production of a legitimizing discourse under the order and commission of the Crown. This thesis therefore seeks to analyse the role of Queen Philippa of Lancaster in the process of legitimizing the Avis Dynasty, both as a political agent of the government during her reign with King John I and as a figure of representation in the Royal Chancellery documents and the Royal Chronicles. Thus, we aim to cooperate on the reformulation of the historiographical perspectives that disregard the power and socio-political agency of women, thus collaborating with the effort towards a more egalitarian History.
