Esta tese investiga as experiências sensoriais de trabalhadores urbanos na África do norte durante os séculos IV e VII. Faz isto por meio da análise de mudanças das formas urbanas de determinadas cidades ao longo desse período delimitado, com foco em Cartago, Sabratha, Leptiminus e Meninx. Num primeiro momento, procura compreender a composição sensorial da paisagem urbana investigada em uma série mudanças ocorridas entre os séculos IV e V. Para tanto, salienta as relações sensoriais como movimentos, visões, presenças, sonoridades e odores. Num segundo momento, passa a explorar os modos pelos quais os grupos subalternos poderiam experimentar os sentidos urbanos de modo distinto. Demonstra, nesse sentido, como o conceito de habitus sensorial pode ser útil para compreensão da formação das percepções sensoriais dos grupos subalternos. Ao fim, passa a investigar os espaços de trabalho e habitação dos grupos subalternos urbanos, uma vez que definidos como principais formadores de seus habitus sensoriais, durante os séculos IV e VII. Com a cronologia ampla nesta parte final, busca-se, para além de compreender a formação dessas disposições sensoriais dos trabalhadores urbanos, analisar como suas formas de experimentar os espaços urbanos poderiam tanto se transformarem, quanto transformar os espaços nos quais foram geradas.

This thesis investigates the sensory experiences of urban workers in North Africa during the 4th and 7th centuries. It does so by analyzing changes in the urban forms of certain cities during this period, with a focus on Carthage, Sabratha, Leptiminus, and Meninx. Initially, it seeks to understand the sensory composition of the urban landscape investigated through a series of changes that occurred between the 4th and 5th centuries. To do so, it highlights sensory relationships such as movements, sights, presences, sounds, and smells. Secondly, it explores the ways in which subaltern groups could experience urban senses differently. In this sense, it demonstrates how the concept of sensorial habitus can be useful for understanding the formation of sensory perceptions of subaltern groups. Finally, it investigates the work and housing spaces of urban subaltern groups, as defined as the main formers of their sensory habitus during the 4th and 7th centuries. With a broad chronology in this final part, it seeks not only to understand the formation of these sensory dispositions of urban workers but also to analyze how their ways of experiencing urban spaces could both transform and be transformed by the spaces in which they were generated.
