Nonnus of Panopolis
Abstract in English
This research intends to discuss the way in which Hellenistic Poetry was received and emulated in Nonnus of Panopolis' Dionysiaca, an epic poem concerning the Dionysian Cycle narrated in forty-eight chants and about twenty-one thousand verses. Based on the principle of ποικιλία, the Nonian epic mixes genres and styles to diversify the epic language. The analysis is based on the influence of poets such as Callimachus, Theocritus and Apollonius of Rhodes had on the Panopolitan poem. The way in which Nonnus uses the inspiration of such authors to compose excerpts and episodes of the divine journey aims, in addition to nuance his poem, to distance it from the Homeric influence, the main one when it comes to the epic genre. In this way, themes that became popular in the Alexandrian era, such as unrequited love, the activity of shepherding, the punishment for spying on a goddess' bath, and the emotional aspects of passion are inserted into the Dionysiaca and mixed with the traditional epic of Homeric inspiration.
