Abstract in English
The objective of the dissertation "A ironia nos contos de Julio Ramón Ribeyro" is to analyse irony as a strategy in the short stories of peruvian writer Julio Ramón Ribeyro. Based on a selection of five short stories, the thesis investigates what roles irony acquires in each one and how it is developed within the narrative. The selection will explore in what ways the use of this writing device helps to define and structure the author's style. For this task, it was indispensable to have a close reading of the most important theories about irony, including works by George Lukács, Vladimir Jankélévitch, Mikhail Bakhtin, Wayne C. Booth, Linda Hutcheon and Beh Brait, as well as theories about the genre of short story itself, based on authors such as Anton Tchekhov, Julio Cortázar and Ricardo Piglia. Also important to understand the use of irony as a resource in Ribeyro's fiction was the literary criticism of the writer's body of work carried by authors like Peter Elmore, Eva Mª Valero Juan, Giovanna Minardi and Jorge Coaguila.
