A espetacularização da política em Bob Roberts

Abstract in English
Bob Roberts (1992) is a pseudo-documentary on a folk singer, representative of New Right, who is slated for Pennsylvania senator in 1990. Within the plot, there are several elements that expose how that new classs backlash manages to borrow the pulverized left-wing speech in order to build a rebel conservative candidate. Simultaneously, we notice a widespread ideological puzzlement, which leads to a culturalization of Politics that influenced the most traditional left-wing citizens such as trade union members to vote for New Right due to moral and cultural alignment. Besides that, we can notice another factor that substantially contributed to such scenario: the usage of media, mainly the TV, as a fundamental political campaign tool, strengthening the logic of spectacles domination. In fact, we can see that it started to mediate all social relations by imposing a single viewpoint: the merchandise. Nevertheless, the film displays that for progressive artists, such as its director Tim Robbins, who advances in the usage of the production apparatus by refunctioning them through the rupture of the industrys formulas, it is possible to break with the logic of spectacle and therefore pluralize the viewpoints. Finally, we can point out that, for Robbins, the fundamental movement for this rupture to happen is the artists self-reflection on its own productive process since he is a worker who does not have the control of the means of production.
