A proposta deste trabalho é analisar os expedientes dramatúrgicos de representação do Sul dos Estados Unidos na peça Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), do dramaturgo estadunidense Tennessee Williams. A peça de Williams, recipiente do Prêmio Pulitzer de Dramaturgia em 1955 e grande sucesso da crítica, dramatiza a relação conflituosa entre Maggie e seu marido Brick, membros da elite proprietária sulista, no dia da festa de aniversário de Big Daddy, o patriarca da família, em sua mansão nas planícies agrárias do Mississippi. A partir de uma investigação crítica da história dos Estados Unidos, com enfoque na história do Sul do país, o trabalho buscou destacar os principais sentidos da formação da nação americana, de seus valores culturais e de suas práticas sociais. A partir disso, foram analisados os procedimentos dramatúrgicos da peça de Williams, a fim de investigar de que forma os conflitos de suas personagens põem-se em relação direta com as estruturas econômicas em que estão inseridas. Para tanto, este trabalho partiu de uma análise formal do conto de Williams que serviu de matriz ficcional para a peça,"Three Players of a Summer Game" (1952), e identificou as principais semelhanças e diferenças entre as obras, para, em seguida, investigar a representação do Sul dos Estados Unidos na peça. Na análise de Cat, houve especial interesse em demonstrar o modo como a simbologia do jogo e as imagens da competição são utilizados no texto para atribuir sentido histórico aos conflitos e objetivos das personagens na peça, sobretudo em relação às tensões políticas e econômicas próprias do Sul.

The objective of this work is to analyze the dramaturgical procedures of representation of the American South in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), by American playwright Tennessee Williams. This play, a recipient of the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and one of Williams's most famous works, dramatizes the conflicted relationship between Maggie and her husband Brick, members of the Southern agrarian elite, over the course of one evening's gathering to celebrate the birthday of patriarch Big Daddy, at the family estate in Mississippi. Starting from a critical investigation of the history of the United States, with special emphasis on the history of the South, this dissertation seeks to highlight the main aspects of the formation of the American nation, its cultural values, and its social practices. Then, it analyzes the dramaturgical procedures of Williams' play and demonstrates that the characters' conflicts and the plot of the play are closely associated with the economic structures of the Mississippi plantation, where the action is set. Drawing from an analysis of the short story that inspired the play, "Three Players of a Summer Game" (1952), also by Williams, this work identified the differences and similarities between both works. Finally, through the formal analysis of the play, it indicates how the symbology of the summer game is used to attribute historical meaning to the plot, mostly in relation to the political and economic tensions that are specific to the American South.
