The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the representations built in the discourses of four Brazilian teachers of English as a foreign language who work in language schools in order to understand aspects of their identity in greater depth. We focus on the subjects´ representations of the English language teaching and learning, the Brazilian people, the native speakers of English, the Portuguese and the English languages. The central hypothesis is that the subjects' discourses, permeated by others that circulate in society, tend to marginalize identity aspects of Brazilians and their culture and legitimate identity aspects and culture of natives from central English speaking countries. The corpus was gathered from audio taped interviews that were transcribed and later analyzed. As to the analysis of the linguistic materiality of the corpus, we have adopted a transdisciplinary approach that includes concepts from Discourse Analysis and Semantics of Enunciation. Among the discourses that constitute the subjects, we highlight the discourse of English as an international language, the neoliberal discourse of Total Quality, the discourse of approaches and methods of foreign language teaching and the colonial discourse. The analysis shows that the subjects, interpellated by these and other discourses, occupy distinct, and often contradictory, discursive positions. We denominate these positions as the lack position, the successful learner's position, the legitimating position, the colonizer's position, the colonist's position, and the colonized's position. Although we observe that the subjects enunciate more frequently from the position of exaltation of the foreigner, there is an emerging discourse of resistance, identified mostly in the representations of the Portuguese language.
