Keywords in Portuguese
Contos
Poe
Século XIX
Sociedade americana

A visible story hides a secret one: the United States of the first half of the 19th century in some Poe's short stories

Abstract in English
Over the years, part of Poe's critical fortune analyzed his work through a strictly biographical slant. Some authors who wrote biographies about Poe, such as Quinn and Shanks, blamed Griswold, who made up numerous controversies about Poes personal life. In order to understand some contradictions made up through these impressions, part of this work will explain some aspects of his life, as well as clarify some issues about his professional life, which are essential to understand the society in which Poe lived and, as a consequence, about his work. The aim of this research is to analyze some of Poe's short stories, in particular, Berenice and The Cask of Amontillado in light of the American society of the first half of the 19th century. For this purpose, we intend to expound some historical, social and environmental information, especially from the cities in which Poe has lived, in order to verify if these short stories could be considered as inspired by his environment. Fisher, Peeples, Shanks, Campbell among others point out the intrinsic relation between many of his short stories and the American society of the 19th century, stating that it wouldnt be possible to read the newspapers of that period and not get across with the themes Poe alluded to in his short stories. We intend, therefore, to demonstrate that these short stories were directly inspired in his society, and to shed light to their impressive socio-historical references
