Prevention of metaphorisation
Abstract in English
This study aimed at investigating the functionings of instructional pedagogic discourse for the teaching of English as a foreign language in private regular schools. Due to the observation of a contradiction between the desire for homogeneity and the constitutive character of heterogeneity, the study presented the hypothesis of the occurrence of discursive moments which attempted to impede heterogeneity. Homogeneisation, which does not allow the flux of heterogeneity, does not contribute to the English learning process since it limits learning to the repetition of imposed pre-established models. Just by following these models, the metaphors of the other, students do not have the opportunity to become subjects in the foreign language and cannot create their own metaphors, the metaphors of the subject. The study followed concepts introduced by Michel Pêcheux in Discourse Analysis and by Jacques Lacan in Psychoanalysis. As a result of the studies, two modes of discursive functionings were observed. In the homogenising mode, discursive constructions of homogeneous representations were observed. This type of representation may alienate the subjects to the models provided preventing them from expressing their subjectivity. In this study, this process which obstructs the way to the metaphor of the subject is called prevention of metaphorisation. The process of prevention of metaphorisation was not perceived in the analyses of instructional discourse in imported support materials. Thus, this corpus segment functioning mode was considered as non-homogenising. Nevertheless, this finding is attributed to the imported material author-subject´s impossibility of constructing imaginary homogeneous representations. These homogeneous representations form the mirror image which fixes the metaphor of the other and obstructs the construction of the metaphor of the subject. Another result the study generated is that the process of prevention of metaphorisation acts in discourse as the fantasy in Psychoanalysis, keeping the subject away from the unconscious dimension of the Real, though it cannot impede its escapes. The discourse analyses observed the three dimensions of the unconscious: the Real, the Simbolic and the Imaginary.
