A presente dissertação buscou compreender a forma como o romance Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha figura o processo de alienação da consciência da personagem que dá título ao livro. Negro e oriundo do interior, o herói do romance conta suas primeiras experiências e desilusões vividas na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Durante a ação do romance é operado sobre Isaías um processo acumulativo de alienação de sua consciência a respeito de sua condição racial e social, concretizado à medida que ele enfrenta obstáculos para sobreviver e realizar seu desejo de inserção social. Esta investigação atentou-se ao caráter eminentemente histórico da alienação e da consciência do herói: a pesquisa foi norteada a partir das relações entre ele, sua sociedade e seu tempo. Nisso, a figuração das relações de dominação social pelo favor e a reificação da notícia e fazer jornalístico foram analisadas em busca de uma melhor compreensão das ações do herói ao longo da narrativa e sua posterior utilização dessas mesmas estruturas sociais para ascender socialmente

This dissertation sought to understand how the novel Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha figures the consciousness alienation process of the main character. Afro-descendant and from the countryside, this novels hero recounts his first experiences and disillusions living in Rio de Janeiro. In the story, Isaías suffers a cumulative process of alienation of his consciousness about his racial and social condition, which unfolds as he faces obstacles to survive and fulfill his desire for social insertion. In this investigation, I highlighted the eminently historical character of the alienation and consciousness of the hero. The research was guided by the relations between him, his society, and his time. Thus the fictionalization of social domination through favor and the reification of journalism were analyzed in search of a better understanding of the heros actions throughout the narrative and his subsequent use of these same social structures to rise socially
