Abstract in English
This work is the result of a long research about the novels of Rodolfo Teófilo (1853-1932) produced between years 1890 and 1900. Considering that both the author and his works, A fome (1890), Os Brilhantes (1895), Maria Rita (1897), and O Paroara (1899), are little known, there was a brief presentation of the novelist, bringing to light important aspects of his context, his intellectual background and the perception of literature that guided the publication of the works studied here. From the collection of critical fortune, whether from Rio de Janeiro or from provincial journals and, successively, those that were recorded in the literary history compendiums and in the manuals of Brazilian Literature, we begin to reflect on the role of these works both in the context of publication and in the history of the novel, as a genre, in Brazil. When evaluating the appraisals over more than one hundred years, it is also intended to try to understand the oscillation movement that happens with this author, sometimes recognized, sometimes ignored, asking the main causes of this alternation and trying to understand the nature of the force that these novels has. Thereby, this research contributes to the investigation of literary activity in Brazil that was produced between Romanticism and Modernism, which has not yet been studied and understood.
