Keywords in Portuguese
Alquimia
Herberto Helder
Literatura portuguesa

Abstract in English
This research endeavors to explore the poetic works of Herberto Helder through the lens of alchemical symbolism, wherein its four fundamental stages, namely Calcinatio (Fire), Solutio (Water), Sublimatio (Air), and Coagulatio (Earth), are associated with the four classical elements. The convergence of Herberto Helder's literary corpus with alchemical motifs is accentuated by the recurrence of related terminologies throughout his oeuvre. Employing a comprehensive approach involving bibliographical, documentary, and analytical research, this thesis meticulously investigates the intricate interplay between Herberto Helder's literary output and the fundamental concepts of alchemical literature, particularly pertaining to transmutation, transformation, and metamorphosis. At the core of Alchemy lies the theoretical principle of transmuting base substances into gold, a profound source of symbolic references that prove invaluable in literary analysis. In this context, it becomes evident that Herberto Helder, through a perpetual process of revision and refinement of his writings, metaphorically emulates the modus operandi of ancient alchemists, who endeavored to perfect nature through their meticulous laboratory experiments. Central to the thesis is the notion that the experience of the mother's demise serves as the pivotal event that shapes the poet's writing, akin to the concept of prima materia in alchemy, which designates any substance whose nature initiates the alchemical process. Subsequently, this study delves into the scrutiny of poems, letters, and prose texts, contributing to a thoughtful discourse surrounding the poetic endeavor as an alchemical work that undergoes the four elemental operations, culminating in the quest for the elusive Philosopher's Stone, emblematic of the essence of his written opus.
