Abstract in Portuguese
A carreira literária de Frances Burney teve seu início com a publicação de Evelina, or the History of a Young Ladys Entrance into the World.

Abstract in English
Frances Burneys literary career set off with the publication of Evelina, or the History of a Young Ladys Entrance into the World. The young womans journey opens the possibility to examine and reflect on the English historical, social and literary context in the eighteenth-century, especially in light of the bourgeois revolution and of the constitution of the novel as a genre. Offering an analysis that aims to reveal the characteristics presented by the novel, we argue that the typology proposed by the Hungarian critic in The Theory of the Novel regarding the novel of education is the definition that most befits Burneys novel. Furthermore, arguments are drawn regarding Burney as a synthesiser for the opposing approaches of the English novel during the eighteenth-century, as well as a critic of the validity of what female education entailed.
