Abstract in English
In the late 1880s, Russian writers' works began to be discussed by Brazilian intellectuals. This movement was part of an international trend disseminated from France starting from the essay The Russian Novel (1886) by Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé. In this essay, Vogüé devotes a chapter to Dostoyevksy's work entitled "the religion of suffering". The Russian author becomes known in the west as an expert in said "religion". Lima Barreto (1881- 1922) was also inspired by this reading and, in several occasions, quoted Dostoyevsky's (1821-1881) novels that were also selected by Vogüé: Crime and Punishment (1866) and The House of the Dead (1862). The Brazilian author highlights in his mentions of Dostoyevsky's work mainly images of the suffering of the destitute and its moralizing effect. With that context in mind, this dissertation intends to comparatively analyze the effects of the modernizing processes on the characters in Crime and Punishment and Recordações do escrivão Isaías Caminha (1909) and Western Europe's role in the Russian and Brazilian experiences of modernity.
