A presente dissertação tem como propósito refletir sobre algumas questões envolvidas na reescrita de peças teatrais de William Shakespeare para crianças, levando-se em consideração o sistema literário infantil inglês. O corpus selecionado é composto pelas narrativas Hamlet; Otelo; Macbeth; publicadas em Tales From Shakespear. Designed for the use of young persons (1807), pelos irmãos Charles e Mary Lamb. Partimos dos pressupostos teóricos, que foram baseados em fundamentos da área de Estudos da Tradução, com a teoria dos polissistemas de Itamar Even-Zohar e as concepções de André Lefevere sobre refração e reescrita, e complementados com as teorias de Estudos da Adaptação, de Linda Hutcheon. Utilizamos também o conceito de tradução intralingual, conforme definido por Roman Jakobson. A pesquisa traz a contextualização da obra na época de sua publicação e discorre sobre a formação da Literatura Infantil. A partir de uma análise comparativa, enfocamos a maneira pela qual protagonistas, temas do mundo adulto e elementos trágicos das peças Shakespearianas foram transformados em narrações dramáticas, que acabaram tornando-se as verdadeiras histórias do dramaturgo para aqueles que não conheceram a obra dele.

This dissertation examines some questions regarding William Shakespeare's plays rewritten for children, taking into account the literary system. The study will focus on the narratives Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth, which were published in Tales From Shakespear. Designed for the use of young persons (1807) by the brother and sister Charles and Mary Lamb. The research was conducted in light of the concepts of Translation Studies, such as the Polysystems Theory of Itamar Even-Zohar, and the conception of refraction/rewriting of André Lefevere, complemented by the Adaptation Studies theories of Linda Hutcheon, as well as the concept of intralingual translation by Roman Jakobson. Tales From Shakespear is contextualized in its particular period, and the formation of Children's Literature is described. Based on a comparative study, we focus on how the main characters, adult themes and tragic elements of the Shakespeare's plays were transformed into dramatic narrations, which in many cases have become many peoples first encounter with Shakespeare.
