Stevens é um dos poetas mais prolíficos do modernismo estadunidense e, apesar disso, sua obra é relativamente pouco explorada no Brasil. Para conhecê-lo, os leitores e leitoras contam apenas com pequenas incursões à sua obra em coletâneas mais gerais -- como as empreendidas por Paulo Vizioli e Augusto de Campos -- ou com edições que percorrem o arco poético completo do poeta, a partir de escolhas pontuais -- conforme proposto por Paulo Henriques Britto , mas ainda assim, não há esforços que se concentrem sobre uma obra específica, organizada pelo próprio autor. Partindo de um poeta dotado de grande sofisticação técnica e virtuosismo formal, o objetivo da presente tese é apresentar traduções -- recriações, transcriações -- aos poemas da obra de estreia do autor, Harmonium, lançada em 1923, e tecer comentários individuais aos processos tradutórios. O livro conta com 71 poemas curtos e três poemas longos, para os quais os comentários resultaram mais robustos e incluíram uma exploração mais detalhada da crítica já estabelecida. Duas características são quase onipresentes nas opiniões publicadas acerca do poeta, tanto nas que o celebram quanto nas que o menoscabam: beleza rítmico-sonora de um lado e, de outro, dificuldade de compreensão. O enfoque destas propostas de tradução, portanto, recai sobre os jogos de palavras e o notável controle de som, musicalidade e ritmo do poeta sem, no entanto, tentar mitigar sua dificuldade de compreensão, visando resgatar, em língua portuguesa, seu destacado hermetismo entre forma e conteúdo

Stevens is one of the most prolific poets of American modernism and, despite this fact, he is relatively ignored in Brazilian literary circles. In order to get acquainted with his work, readers rely solely on a small handful of translations of his poems, either in general collections involving other poets -- such as those undertaken by Paulo Vizioli and Augusto de Campos -- or in editions that cover the poet's complete poetic arc, based on specifically chosen poems -- as proposed by Paulo Henriques Britto -- but still, there are no efforts that focus on a specific oeuvre, organized by the author himself. Tackling this highly sophisticated and formal virtuoso poet, the objective of this dissertation is to propose translations -- recreations, transcreations -- to the poems of the author's debut book, Harmonium, first released in 1923, and to make individual comments on the translation processes. The book features 71 short poems and three long ones, for which the commentaries were more robust and included a more detailed exploration of the available criticism. Two characteristics are almost ubiquitous in published opinions about the poet, by both those who celebrate and those that belittle his poetry: rhythmic-sonorous beauty on the one hand and, on the other, his quasi-obscure style of writing which leads to intricate and enigmatic poems. The focus of these translations, therefore, falls on the word-play, puns, and the authors remarkable control of sound, musicality and rhythm without, however, trying to mitigate his difficulty, aiming to recreate, in Portuguese, his outstanding hermeticism between form and content
