Abstract in English
The Worm Ouroboros is held to be one of the best and most accomplished singlevolume novels within the canon of fantasy, a genre which its author, Eric Rücker Eddison (1882-1945), helped create. The almost 500-page-long piece inspired admiration in well-respected writers, such as James Stephens, H. P. Lovecraft, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Ursula Le Guin, Lyon Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt, and has been challenging the conceptual tools of generations of literary critics. This novel has not yet been translated into Portuguese. This dissertation aims to introduce The Worm Ouroboros to the Brazilian public in a project divided in three parts: a description of the novel, its peculiarities and its historical context; an analysis focused on the main translation problems anticipated; and example-translations that embody the main challenges to be faced in the production of a Lusophone translation.
