Abstract in English
An education focused on the relationship between Science, Technology and Society allows the development of critical capacity of citizens for the decision making as members of the community. However, even if official documents suggest teaching with these principles, few teachers are able to implement this in the classroom. Because of this, we analyze the implementation of an STS-focused teaching sequence conceived together with a chemistry teacher, using the process of oriented reflection (POR), pondering on the impact of STS in her personal and academic life. For this analysis, firstly, we did semistructured interviews with 15 chemistry teachers and applied an instrument with 12 of those teachers to understand these teachers' general opinion on contextualized teaching and STS teaching, both in their personal and academic life. After this exploratory phase, we invited a chemistry teacher that lives in São Paulo to continue on this research by planning and implementing an STS-focused teaching sequence. The chosen topic for the teaching sequence was "Fuels", and the teaching sequence was conceived using the methodological model of Aikenhead. Throughout the PORs, it was possible to perceive the teacher's evolution regarding her understanding of a teaching-focused on STS, since she pointed difficulties but then proposed some solutions. We also could perceive the evolution of the teacher in the meetings, by exposing doubts, questions and suggestions. In the lasts PORs, the teacher showed some improvement in overcoming her developmental needs, which shows the potential of using a reflective process for this purpose. Finally, an instrument was applied with the students in order to understand their point of view during the implementation of the proposed teaching sequence. The results showed that there was greater participation and interaction with the teacher due to the change in class dynamics. About the topic, the students considered their study interesting, as they learned about how fuels are made, their different environmental implications and how they can make better choices in the future. From all the results presented, we believe that choosing a STS-focused teaching sequence and use a reflective process before, during and after the implementation of that sequence contributes to several changes in the teaching and learning process.
