Abstract in English
The curriculum has been in the last years an issue that has left universities and entered school boundaries. We have been seeing attempts from educational institutions, through the creation of various materials and training courses for teachers, to show the issue in a broad way, as it really is, involving almost everything that happens in school, including the duties of both teachers and students in classroom. In many Brazilian states the Education Secretaries have produced documents with curriculum guidelines. Sao Paulo state went further by creating also Notebooks for students and teachers, in an attempt to adopt a new curriculum in the state. In this work, we present a case study conducted in a public school of Sao Paulo, investigating in person the curriculum of Sciences applied in three classrooms during the year of 2009, focusing the choice and organization of the contents by a Sciences teacher. This study also included products and evaluations of the students as well as meetings of joint pedagogical work hours (HTPC in Portuguese). We analysed what actually happened in this public school with regard to curriculum issues and could compare this reality with the government current curriculum policy. The honesty and courage of this teacher to show us this fact allowed us to conclude that the curriculum is still seen by teachers as a synonym of programme and contents list. The Student Book and the life experience of the teacher play an important role in the selection and organization of the contents, as well as her way of interpreting education as a transmission of knowledge. The Notebooks created by the Secretary, that are part of the teaching system to which this school belongs, despite having open the possibility to change the old idea of curriculum, showing education through competences and skills, with strategies to encourage more participation of the students in class, created uneasiness to this teacher and had punctual results. Teachers like to work with motivating learning strategies and resources, but because of problematic teaching skills and lack of time to prepare new lessons, those elements do not meet the goals that originated their creation and in many times the old teaching way prevails. We discuss in this work, therefore, the transition stage in which we are between two paradigms: the modern curriculum and the post-modern curriculum. Ultimately we know it is expected that the ideal curriculum hardly meets the real curriculum, but we noticed that the reductions of the gap between them is still very far from the duties in public school.
