Abstract in English
Lies have always been a weapon of war and a tool capable of turning the tide in elections. However, in the contemporary world, sophisticated technologies, capable of collecting countless data from social media users and sending mass messages to millions of people, have faced democracies with new challenges. Using instruments such as social networks, the dissemination of fake news has been widely applied in political processes around the world. In Latin America, the mass transmission of fake news is seen as a key element in political disputes, intervening in electoral processes and contributing to the destabilization of democracy. This research sought to understand how fake news influenced the elections in Brazil in 2018 and Bolivia in 2019. To do this, we addressed the socio-political contexts that preceded the elections in each country, in addition to comparing both scenarios, seeking to outline the similarities and differences in each case. In this way, we identified that fake news and disinformation were capable of influencing the choice of candidates in the presidential elections in both countries
