Keywords in Portuguese
América Latina
Imigração okinawana
Okinawa

Abstract in English
The present research aims to analyze the investigation by James L. Tigner: The Okinawans in Latin America, carried out in the early 1950s, focusing on immigration to Bolivia and Brazil. The report was commissioned by the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyus Islands (USCAR), when Okinawa was under American occupation, which lasted from 1945 until 1972. Tigner traveled to several countries to find a suitable destination for sending immigrants, since Okinawa had a high population density and land was being disputed for the construction of US military bases. The present research analyzed the results found by Tigner, exploring how United States scientific production served as a tool for maintaining the occupation of Okinawa and its interests in the region, also noting the convergence of interests between the United States and the Brazilian and Bolivian governments about immigration policies and the settlement of the center of the continent
