Fatores de motivação e participação de rastreadores no processo de inteligência competitiva
Keywords in Portuguese
Inteligência competitiva
Abstract in Portuguese
O trabalho desenvolveuse
relacionamento.

Motivation factors and participation of trackers in the competitive intelligence process
Keywords in English
Competitive intelligence
Abstract in English
The present study investigates the factors that motivate individuais to participate in intelligence
processes within an organization. It explores, specifically, the activity of collection of information
on weak signals. The participation of collaborators in the process of identification and capture of
weak signals is a voluntary activity (LESCA; 2003). These collaborators are called here trackers.
They need to be attentive and capture the signals that are emitted in a written, oral or visual form.
As it is a voluntary activity, this study aimed to understand what factors make these trackers collect
these signals or, in other words, what factors make them be intrinsically motivated to participate in
the collection process and in the competitive intelligence process. Based on an initial exploratory
and qualitative research, the study developed firstly into a case study, and subsequently into
quantitative research, which was also conducted through a case study. Interviews and questionnaires
answered by the trackers who participated in the studied intelligence processes were analyzed. The
First case, approaching qualitative research, took place in a company of mineral extraction and
Processing, and the second case, the quantitative research, was carried out in a company that
provides data and voice Services. The main theoretical framework of the research are the studies on
competitive intelligence that explore approaches to capture and treat weak signals, early wamings
(Ansoff; 1975, Lesca; 1994), as well as studies on behavior and motivation developed in the Self-
Determination Theory proposed by Deci and Ryan (1985). I investigated mainly the relationship
between motivation factors like feedback, support from the management body, awards, latent
dimensions like feelings of autonomy or competence, and the trackers intrinsic motivation to
participate in the intelligence process.
The results allow to identify a positive correlation between intrinsic motivation to participate in the
intelligence process and some factors such as feedback, use of Computer systems, value of the
process to the company and also dimensions like feelings of competence, autonomy and
relationship.
