Abstract in English
The aim of this investigation has bem to study the effects of Nb additions to all austenite matrices of the type Fe-15Cr-15Ni. These matrices are, because of a preselected Cr:ni ratio, free of δ ferrite, intermetallic phases like σ and x and deformation induced martensites. Five heats containing ˂0,002%, 0,44%, 1,74% and 1,88% Nb have been studied. The carbon content of the alloys were kept bellow 0,03% to minimized Nb consumption due to NbC formation. The residual element content, those of P, S, Cu, Sn and As were also kept low. The alloys were melted in a vacuum induction furnace, cast in vaccum and hot forged. Tapes were also produced by rapid solidification "mel-Spinning". The microstructure of the alloys after the various fabrication steps and after the various heat treatment has been studied in detail. In order to do this, a number of complementary microstructural analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive analysis (with corrections) transmission electron microscopy with selected area electron diffraction, polished surface x-ray diffractometry, precipitate extraction and x-ray diffractometry of extracted residues (Debye-Scherrer camera), differential thermal analysis and magnetic phase detection (ferritoscope) have been used. Besides the austenitic matrix and the mixed oxide incluions, only two other phases have been observed in the microstructures of the alloys containing Nb: (Fe, Cr, Ni, Si)₂Nb and Nb (C, N). The amount, size, distribuition, morphology, composition, crystalinestructure and the orientation relationship of the phases present have been studied with the aid of the different techniques mentioned above. The influence of Nb on the liquidus and solidus lines have also been determined and a schematic Fe-15Cr-15Ni-0,03C-Nb diagram proposed. The maximum solubility of Nb has been determined and the precipitation of the Laves phase studied. Correlations between the alloy microstructure and its mechanical properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation and hardness) have been estabilished . The mechanisms to explain increases in mechanical strength and the influence of Nb have been evaluated. It has been estimated that 1% Nb in solid solution leads to 10-15% increase in the hardness, yeld strength and UTS. After adequate aging it has been estimated that 1% Nb causes a 30 to 40% increase in Y.S. and 60 to 70% increase in UTS. In both cases (solid solution hardening or precipitation hardening) the ductility of the alloys remains high. In the as cast state, the positive influence of Nb, (present in the large particles of precipitates) on the hardness, Y.S. and UTS is little and the negative influences on ductility is accentuated. In the forged and solubilized state, the positive effect of Nb, most of wich are in the austenite, on hardness, on Y.S. and UTS is greater than that in the as cast state and does not cause any decrease in ductility. By means of ultra rapid solidification (melt spinning) it has been possible to retain all the Nb in solid solution in the austenite. The alloys have very fine grain size (2-7 µm) and are practically free of segregation and texture.Correlations between the microstructure and workability have been estabilished and a 1050-1200 ºC temperature range has been suggested for forging alloys with high Nb contents. The oxidation behavior of the alloys in air has been studied by thermogravimetry (at constant rates of heating and in isothermal tests) and through cyclic oxidation tests. The oxide was studied with the aid of SEM, X-ray diffractometry and X-ray fluorescence analysis. Niobium significantly increases the oxidation resistance of the alloys. The oxide formed consists basically of Fe₂O₃ and the quantity of Fe₃O₄ and Cr₂O₃ increase with increase in Nb content. The increase in the quantity of Cr₂O₃ in the oxide especially at the oxide/metal interface, is considered to contribute towards the formation of a diffusion barrier for Fe ions and thus inhibit continued oxidation.
