Abstract in English
This work is an investigation of the reduction of iron oxides by carbon dissolved in liquid iron-carbon alloys; the iron oxides were added as pellets, in the temperature range 1523 K-1973 K. The experimental technique employed was that of constant volume pressure increase (CVPI). Graphite crucibles were used in all the experiments; in this way the initial bath was carbon satured. The parameters studied were: oxide type and weight, temperature, oxide outer area, free surface area of the bath and pellet´s density. Experiments were also performed in order to obtain partially reduced pellets. The samples obtained were examined through scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive analysis. It has been determined that the reaction time increases with the increase in the pellet weight and decreases with the increase in temperature, with the increases in the oxide outer area and with the increase in the bath free surface area, whereas the pellet density has no effect on the reaction time. Iron oxide pellets containing magnesium oxide reacts slower then purer pellets. It has also been determined that the effect of temperature on the reaction rate depends on the temperature range: at temperatures below the melting point of wustite the rate is more affected by temperature than above the wustite melting point. Analysis of the obtained results lead to a better understanding of the reaction mechanism.
