Abstract in English
The fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) is a composite that can be used as an alternative to the ordinary reinforcement for continuous concrete structures and pre-cast components. These applications of FRC are associated to infrastructure projects with high social demand such as sanitation and transport systems, involving pavements and tunnels. However, the FRC has the composite characteristics that must be taken in account for safe engineering application. This work aims to present a systematic review, and detailed assessment of the research production of the author. This research production had covered the main composite technology aspects in order to ensure the optimized use of the material in its main applications. So, a review of fundamental concepts is presented addressing the row-materials and the interaction between fiber and matrix, especially regarding to post-cracking behavior. A review of the factors influencing the performance of the composite as the influence of fiber content, the physical and mechanical characteristics of the fibers, and the matrix strength is presented. Contributions to the quality control test methods are presented in conjunction with the main aspects related to their reliability, as well as its limitations and possibilities of application. The rationale for the mix-design methods developed specifically for FRC in order to fit specific performance requirements is also presented. Special focus is given to concrete with plastic consistency destined to pavements and for precast tunnel lining segments for TBM systems. The mix-design method developed for steel fiber reinforced shotcrete, where the use of the entire projection system is necessary, is also analyzed. These general concepts are the fundamentals for others applications with higher technological demands. This is the case of the NATM tunneling method, where special attention should be give to the specific performance requirements, such as the toughness evolution since shotcrete early age. Finally, the use of FRC pipes for sewage systems is presented with a different treatment due to the fact that is a component, and due to the innovations provided by the author in the research approach. The contributions were aimed at better understanding the mechanical behavior and the means to obtain better control and optimize the fiber consumption ensuring the final appropriate performance of the component. From the research results overview, it was possible to identify key technological parameters to be transferred to society and, in particular, to the construction industry, which has not been able to put into practice many of the concepts required for correct application of FRC.
