Este texto crítico sistematiza algumas ideias a respeito da aproximação entre a história da ciência e o ensino de química. Situando-se em relação à literatura da área, este texto aponta para a necessidade de reflexões de natureza historiográfica para que a abordagem da história da ciência possa convergir com os objetivos educacionais da atualidade, tanto em termos do ensino de conceitos quanto em relação a discussões sobre as características do conhecimento científico. Tendo como referência a contemporânea historiografia da ciência, apresenta-se a análise de livros didáticos de química para os níveis médio e superior. Também são propostos alguns estudos de caso em história da química, com o intuito de se discutir possibilidades de sua utilização na formação de professores e no ensino médio.

This critical text presents possible links relating the history of science to chemical education. Considering the literature in chemical education, this text points to the need of an appropriate historiographical background in order to make the history of science approach converge to present-day educational goals. It is argued that history of science may be an important means to teach chemistry concepts, and also to discuss the characteristics of scientific knowledge. Contemporary historiography of science is used here as a theoretical framework for the analysis of high-school and university chemistry textbooks. Case studies in the history of chemistry are also presented, aiming at the discussion of possibilities for their use in initial and in-service teacher education and in secondary education
