Keywords in Portuguese
Resposta de observação; Análise do comportamento; Análise de contingências; Estímulo discriminativo; Pombos

Observing response: The main questions in the field anatyzed from three experiments with pigeons.

Abstract in English
The present work analyzes the main questions that historically guide researches on observing behavior, that is, the possible reinforcing functions of discriminative stimulus of low or null probability of reinforcement (S-), the possible differences between primates and non-primates concerning the reinforcement by s-, and the ability of different theories to predict conditioned reinforcement, especially the delay-reduction and the uncertainty-reduction models. The literature is initially reviewed by examining, organizing and summarizing a large nuR1ber of studies according to methods and species they have employed. Following, three experiments with pigeons are described and their results establish the bases to analyze the current state of the field. General results demonstrate the inadequacy of species-specific hypotheses, face to observing responses by s- not only in primates, but also in non primates. A critical evaluation of the field reveals how improper the attempts to analyze s- categorically as either a conditioned reinforcer or a punisher have been. The contingencies that involve observing responses are multiple and complex, so that the ongoing polarization of the subject, normally represented by the conditioned reinforcing models, has taken researchers to analyze this important behavior isolated from adjunct behaviors, which directly affect it. Thus, ignoring the context of analysis generates insufficient results, since it is absolutely necessary to consider the interactions of contingencies that set the possible and diverse stimulus functions.
