Levando em consideração a problemática evangelizadora jesuítica no contexto asiático, este trabalho pretende destacar algumas particularidades com relação à polêmica e à diferente interpretação dos Ritos (indianos) do Malabar. Inserindo-se na perspectiva das anteriores propostas de Alessandro Valignano, no Japão, e de Matteo Ricci, na China, a missão jesuítica na Índia, segundo a política formulada e defendida por outro padre italiano, Roberto de' Nobili, também desencadeará uma acesa polêmica, tanto no contexto asiático, quanto junto à Congregação de Propaganda Fide. Em Madurai, o jesuíta italiano tentou conciliar hinduísmo e cristianismo, apresentando os jesuítas nas funções de brâmanes ocidentais. Ao contrário do que aconteceu na China, todavia, as tensões em relação a essa estratégia cresceram aqui, inicialmente, sobretudo no interior das missões indianas da ordem jesuítica. Como aquela relativa aos ritos chineses, essa disputa sobre os ritos do Malabar também se desencadeou a partir do choque entre missionários com relação à oportunidade de permitir ou menos aos neófitos de continuar a praticar alguns ritos ligados às tradições de seu País. O conflito foi se estabelecendo e crescendo ao redor de uma divergência na interpretação desses ritos: tratava-se de ritos civis ou religiosos? As diferentes respostas subentendiam interesses e implicações bastante relevantes com relação ao projeto missionário jesuítico. Foi, finalmente, na diferente interpretação dos sinais simbólicos dos brâmanes sannyasi, aos quais se inspirava a praxe de adaptação implementada pela proposta missionária de de' Nobili, que se acendeu o confronto conhecido, sucessivamente, enquanto a polêmica dos ritos.

Considering the matter of jesuit evangelization in asian context, we intend to excel some details concerning the polemics and the differentinterpretation of (indian) Rituals of Malabar. Following the perspective of previous purposes like the ones of Alessandro Valignano, in Japan, and of Matteo Ricci, in China, the jesuit mission in India, according to policy prepared and defended by another indian priest, Roberto de' Nobili, will also bring a great controversion both in asian context and in the Congregation of Propaganda Fide. In Madurai, the italian jesuit tried to match hiduism ans christianism, presenting the jesuits as western brahmins. Opposite to what happened in China, nevertheless, the tensions about this strategy grew here, at first, inside indian jesuit missions. Similar to that concerning the chinese rituals, this confrontation about the rituals of Malabar also took place from the clash among missionaries around the opportunity of allowing the newly-converted to keep on practicing some rituals form their country's tradition. The conflict was being stablished and growing around a disagreement in the interpretation of those rituals: were they civil or religious rituals? The different answers bring along realy important interests and implications inside the jesuit missionary project. It was, at last, in the different interpretation of sannyasi brahmins'symbols, hich inspired the adaptation práxis stablished by de' Nobili's missionary purpose that the confrontation about the rituals broke out.
