Abstract in English
This study was an attempt to identify the relationship between some selected socioeconomic factors and the economic efficiency of farms in the municipio of Piracicaba during the agricultural year 1969/70. The basic information was obtained through direct interviews with 182 farmers of a proportional area sample in the municipio, including landowners and non-landowners (sharecroppers and renters). In order to attain the objectives of the study, the dependent variable economic efficiency was calculated using the ratio of gross income to variable costs on each farm. The independent variable: size of farm, land tenure, working capital, farming diversification, market participation, farming mechanization, level of education, use of rural credit, and level of adoption of farming practices, were individually studied in association to four categories of farmers in terms of economic efficiency. The selection of these socioeconomic variables was based on a bibliographic review. This review brought to light some results obtained by other authors in similar studies, which also made the formulation of the specific hypotheses of this study possible. The X2 (chi-square) and the correlation tests of Spearman and of Pearson were used. The 5% level of significance was taken as the rejection limit of the null hypotheses.
