Influence of genotype and site of production on the incidence of fungi on cotton (Gossupium hirsutum L.) seed in the state of Paraná - Brazil
Abstract in English
In this study the incidence of fungi in cotton seed proceeding from Regional Varietal Trials of the Agronomic Institute of Paraná (crop years 1983/84 and 1984/85) was determined. Seeds of five cultivars (IAC-17, IAC-19, IAC-20, PR 349.79, and Paraná-1) produced in six sites of the State of Paraná (Assaí, Cambará, Colorado, Ibiporã, Londrina, and Roncador), harvest year 1983/84, were submitted to the blotter test for determining the percentage of associated fungi. Among them, the most detected were i>Alternaria tenuis, Colletotrichum gossypii, Fusarium spp. and Pinicilium spp. Significant differences occurred among cultivars and among sites in regard to the incidence of these fungi and to total score of fungi. Cultivar Paraná-1 showed the lowest incidence, except for and A. tenuis and Pinicilium spp., whose incidences were higher on seed of this cultivar, as compared to the others. In regard to sites, the lowest incidences occurred on seeds proceeding from Assaí and Ibiporã, and the highest incidences on those proceeding from Londrina. In the second year (crop season 1984/85) seeds of cultivar IAC-17, IAC-19, IAC-20, PR 71982, and PR 09282, produced in the sites of Alto Piquiri, Assaí, Astorga, Siqueira Campos, and Ubiratã, and of cultivars IAC-17, IAC-19, IAC-20, PR 71982, and Paraná-1, produced in the municipalities of Cambará, Ivaiporã, Londrina, and Palotina, were utilized. The standard germination test was also carried out and the results correlated with the incidence of fungi. The fungi detected most frequently from the seeds of the two groups of cultivars and sites were A. tenuis, Botryodiplodia theobromae, C. gossypii, Fusarium semitectum, F. moniliforme and Penicillium spp. Except A. tenuis and Penicillim spp., significant differences occurred among cultivars as to the incidence of these fungi, where Paraná-1 was outstanding for its low incidence. With regard to the sites of the first group, the lowest incidences occurred on seeds proceeding from Alto Piquiri and Assaí, except for Penicillium spp., and the highest incidences occurred on those proceeding from Ubiratã. In the second site group, the lowest incidences occurred on seeds proceeding from Cambará and Palotina, and the highest on those proceeding from Londrina. Also, there was shown to be a significant correlation between germination and the incidence of A. tenuis, B. theobromae, C. gossypii, F. moniliforme and total incidence of fungi.
