Os municípios brasileiros passam por sérios problemas referentes ao gerenciamento dos resíduos sólidos domiciliares, agravados pela falta de recursos técnicos e financeiros. Em muitos casos a técnica tem sucumbido ao improviso e a preservação do meio ambiente não tem sido considerada como um fator relevante ao desenvolvimento social. As usinas de reciclagem e compostagem são parte dos sistemas de tratamento de resíduos sólidos domiciliares utilizados no Brasil. Existiam até 1994, cerca de 71 usinas instaladas de 10 sistemas diferentes. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre processamento de resíduos sólidos domiciliares em uma usina do sistema Dano, com dados reais de produção e verificação do processo nos principais pontos, por meio da caracterização física dos resíduos sólidos. São apresentadas descrições dos sistemas visitados, e observações referentes aos aspectos de saúde e segurança do trabalhador

Brazilian municipal districts pass by serious problems due to the residues, worsened by the lack of technical and financial resources. In many cases the technique has been succumbing to improvisation and the preservation of the enviromnent has been considered as an important factor to the social development. The recycling and composting system (or material recovery facilities (MRF) with a composting system) are one of the systems of treatment of domestic solid waste used in Brazil. They existed, up to 1994, about 71 installed of 10 different systems. This work presents a study about the processing of domestic solid waste in an recycling with DANO composting system, with real data of production and verifícation of the process in the main points, by means of the physical characterization of the solid residues. The complete descriptions of the visited systems, and observations of the aspects of health and the worker' s safety.
