Abstract in English
Sugar cane is one of the most important agricultural cultivation in Brazil, which can be found in large areas of the country. As a result of its production mode there are many social and environmental impacts, such as changes in the native vegetation, the intensive use of chemical products, erosion, silting, soil compacting and burning. Besides, the incomes and the agricultural areas are held by one culture and few landlords. The present work discusses the environmental components that are impacted by the sugar and the alcohol sector in order to consider them in a social and ecological certification of sugar cane and its industrial process. Therefore, it is presented, at first part, a brief history of sugar cane inBrazil, a bibliographic revision of environmental certification, environmental management, the National Environmental Act and some of its instruments The environmental impacts of the sugar and alcohol sector activities were systematized by the Matrix of Impacts Method with a wide bibliographic revision, interviews, and participation in scientific events. Those impacts were analyzed to verify the effectiveness of the environmental and social parameters established by a social and ecological certification. Social and environmental certification is meant to be a way to adjust the sugar and alcohol sector activities. So, this certification must involve technical aspects and social demands. The work suggests some general indicators to the principles of the analyzed certification as well as reform or elimination of some activities that cause many negatives impacts
