Esta pesquisa visa refletir sobre o início do século XX como um período marcado pela expansão do ensino primário em São Paulo e o papel desempenhado pelos projetos políticos, educacionais e higiênicos voltados para a infância pobre. O foco da tese é construir uma narrativa histórica sobre a instalação, inserção e contribuições da Casa da Divina Providência na cidade. O objetivo central é analisar as propostas de assistência e educação destinadas às crianças desvalidas e pobres acolhidas nesse ambiente católico e visa contribuir para o entendimento da assitência à infância desfavorecida em um determinado contexto sóciohistórico e cultural na cidade de São Paulo, oferecendo esclarecimentos significativos acerca do apoio prestado às órfãs assistidas por essa instituição. A metodologia empregada baseiase na pesquisa documental, utilizando fontes como cartas, relatórios de inspeção, registros de matrículas, regimentos internos, manuais, fotografias, jornais da época entre outros. A análise da cultura escolar dessa instituição revela que a proposta pedagógica integrava instrução e educação religiosa no currículo e nas atividades curriculares. A pesquisa permite uma imersão aprofundada no espaço escolar, permeado por valores católicos em relação à família, moral e princípios cívicos para as mulheres. Destaca-se a intenção de formar as alunas como boas esposas, mães católicas e exemplos para a sociedade. A tese contribui para a compreensão do papel dessa instituição no contexto histórico, cultural e social da São Paulo da época, evidenciando a interseção entre educação, assistência social e valores religiosos na formação das jovens atendidas. No âmbito dessa investigação, destaca-se a significativa importância de Teresa Grillo Michel e das Pequenas Irmãs da Divina Providência no cenário da educação das meninas pobres no início do século XX em São Paulo. As Irmãs da Divina Providência, sob a orientação da madre, foram agentes essenciais na execução dessas propostas. A atuação direta dasirmãs no cotidiano escolar contribuiu para a formação integral das jovens, indo além do ensino tradicional ao integrar a educação religiosa como parte intrínseca do processo educacional. Dessa forma, a pesquisa destaca o papel central de Teresa e das Irmãs da Divina Providência na moldagem da educação oferecida a essas meninas pobres, sublinhando sua influência na construção do ethos educacional e na promoção de valores que transcendiam a esfera acadêmica, orientando a formação das jovens não apenas como alunas, mas como membros exemplares da sociedade.

This research aims to reflect on the early 20th century as a period marked by the expansion of primary education in São Paulo and the role played by political, educational, and hygienic projects focused on impoverished children. The focus of the thesis is to construct a historical narrative about the establishment, integration, and contributions of the Casa da Divina Providência in the city. The central objective is to analyze the assistance and education proposals aimed at the destitute and poor children sheltered in this Catholic environment, contributing to the understanding of assistance to disadvantaged children in a specific sociohistorical and cultural context in the city of São Paulo. It offers significant insights into the support provided to the orphans cared for by this institution. The methodology employed in this thesis is based on documentary research, using sources such as letters, inspection reports, enrollment records, internal regulations, manuals, photographs, newspapers of the time, among others. The analysis of the school culture of this institution reveals that the pedagogical proposal integrated instruction and religious education into the curriculum and curricular activities. The research allows for an in-depth immersion in the school environment, permeated by Catholic values regarding family, morality, and civic principles for women. The intention to educate the students as good wives, Catholic mothers, and examples for society stands out. The thesis contributes to understanding the role of this institution in the historical, cultural, and social context of São Paulo at that time, highlighting the intersection between education, social assistance, and religious values in the formation of the young girls attended. In the scope of this investigation, the significant importance of Teresa Grillo Michel and the Little Sisters of Divine Providence in the scenario of the education of poor girls in early 20th century São Paulo is emphasized. The Sisters of Divine Providence, under the guidance of the mother, were essential agents in the implementation of these proposals. The direct involvement of the sisters in the daily school life contributed to the integral formation of the young girls, going beyond traditional teaching by integrating religious education as an intrinsic part of the educational process. Thus, the research highlights the central role of Teresa and the Sisters of Divine Providence in shaping the education offered to these poor girls, emphasizing their influence in shaping the educational ethos and promoting values that transcended the academic sphere, guiding the formation of the young girls not only as students but as exemplary members of society.
