Abstract in English
Because of the increased interest of the possible connection between the diets of children an adolescents and diseases of adulthood, the diets of young people have recently received increased attention. This study was conducted to design a food frequency questionnaire for assessing the habitual diets of children from 2 to 5 years. It were identified the most important sources of total calories, carbohydrate, proteins, total fat, retinol, vitamin C, calcium and iron 24h dietary recalls applied in a random population sample aged 2 to 5 years in the city of São Paulo. The average or median portion were presented. The FFQ asked about the frequency of children's consumption of 57 items over the previous six months. It were defined seven categories of food frequency. The FFQ was tested in a pilot study with 33 parents/guardians to evaluate the instrument's structure. The FFQ seemed to be a brief, easy-to-use dietary assessment instrument that could be useful in epidemiological studies of children's intakes over extended periods.
