As populações tradicionais, que têm por característica uma relação de dependência e interação com a natureza, reproduzem suas técnicas ancestrais e ecológicas no seu modo de vida e na sua forma de habitar. Suas construções podem receber o nome de arquitetura vernacular, que compreende as habitações e todos os outros edifícios das pessoas relacionados com os contextos ambientais e recursos disponíveis. A partir dos conceitos de Geografia da Arquitetura, conhecimento proveniente da área da Geografia Cultural, e de Arquitetura Vernacular, este estudo buscou compreender as paisagens dos Lençóis Maranhenses como parte da cultura local, tanto na forma imaterial e no modo de vida, e principalmente na cultura material, nas construções das habitações e forma de morar. Como resultado, foram elaborados mapas das tipologias arquitetônicas e mapa das paisagens, como os buritizais, de onde se obtém as palhas, o carrasco, onde se encontram as madeiras das estruturas, as tabatingas e os lavados, onde se encontram as argilas utilizadas nas paredes. Os nomes das paisagens foram usados conforme a nomenclatura da região, como o nome "carrasco" para a vegetação de formação savânica do Mapa de Uso e Cobertura do MapBiomas e o nome "lavado" para as áreas de campo alagado

Traditional populations, which are characterized by a relationship of dependence and interaction with nature, reproduce their ancestral and ecological techniques in their way of life and in their way of living. Its constructions can be called vernacular architecture, which comprises people's homes and all other buildings related to environmental contexts and available resources. Based on the concepts of Architectural Geography, knowledge from the Cultural Geography area, and Vernacular Architecture concepts, this study sought to understand the landscapes of Lençóis Maranhenses as part of local culture, both in intangible form and in the way of life, and mainly in material culture, in housing construction and way of living. As a result, maps of architectural typologies and maps of landscapes were drawn up, such as the buritizais, where the straw is obtained, the carrasco, where the wood for the structures is found, the tabatingas and washed areas, where the clay used in the walls is found. The names of the landscapes were used according to the nomenclature of the region, such as the name "carrasco" for the savanna vegetation on the MapBiomas Use and Coverage Map and the name "lavado" for the flooded field areas
