Keywords in Portuguese
A história secreta
Donna Tartt
Literatura gótica
Romance acadêmico

Abstract in English
The objective of this dissertation is the analysis of the novel The Secret History (1992), by Donna Tartt, whose plot revolves around a young middle-class man who enters a privileged college in New England and whose fascination with his classmates from the ruling class makes him wants to imitate their behavior in search of social advancement, becoming an accomplice in murders perpetrated by his colleagues. Through the analysis of excerpts from the novel, the aim is to understand how the work is a direct heir to the tradition of the academic novel and its discussions about social inequality present in academia. Furthermore, we investigate how the protagonist uses cultural capital as a form of social ascension, based on hierarchies guided by aesthetic taste. From an analysis of the aesthetic concepts presented by the narrator in the narrative (picturesque, sublime and beautiful), the development of the narrator's aesthetic perspective was developed by the emphasis in his specifications about the country house, a place used as a locus horrendus, on which the author worked with the Gothic literature. It is concluded that the meritocratic content of the protagonist's speech is surrounded by unrealities and illusions, which become even more evident when he uses different literary genres to read the world around him.
