O sagrado na literatura
Abstract in Portuguese
à semelhança do profetismo vetaro-testamentário. (1980), Memorial do Convento (1982) e In nomine dei (1993).

The sacred in literature
Abstract in English
The objective of this research is to demonstrate that José Saramago's literary production has chosen the sacred as a recurring theme in its works, the result being embodied in an ethical attitude in relation to social injustice and religious intolerance, in similarity with the Old Testament prophetism. In the first part, we approach the concept of sacred , with the aim of understanding the presence of this theme in Risen from lhe Ground (1980), What shall I do with this Book? (1980), Baltazar and Blimunda (1982) and In nomine dei (1993). Furthermore, from the notion of "dispensability of the sacred" as a literary resource used by the author, we will analyze the religious dlscourses of padre Agamedes, in Risen from the Ground, as well as some ímportant Christian symbols such as the Eucharisty, the Trinity, God's Kingdom, Christmas and Passion, investigating the means by which their use does not constitute an urgent need in the narrative. Finally, in the last part, we will approach the means by which the Portuguese novelist deals with the theme of religious intolerance as a current scourge in the history of humanity
