Abstract in English
This research aims to investigate processes of identity construction in the literary works of the Armenian-American author William Saroyan (1908-81), a direct descendant of an immigrant family that had anticipated the events of the Armenian genocide (1915-23). This analysis is based on the examination of cultural and linguistic markers in his short stories, in the dialogical situations created for his characters involving Armenian interlocutors among their peers and among other American citizens. To do so, we took as a basis the interactional studies of Brown & Levinson and Paul Grice; the scenario of identity crisis experienced by the modern subject, especially in contexts of diasporic processes and cultural traumas, as discussed by Stuart Hall; and finally, the development of autofictional practices, which were theoretically elaborated by French critics decades after the author's literary debut. The short stories selected for this research respected the criteria of thematic relevance according to the theoretical framework addressed and the temporal range of publications, in order to ensure that the scope of the analysis is sufficiently comprehensive to encompass different phases of the author's life and the historical events that marked the 20th century
