Abstract in English
This thesis introduces an overview of the presence of Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) in the Brazilian press, from the early 1910s to the end of the 2010s, thus covering over one hundred years of the history regarding the reception of this French poet and multi-artist in Brazil. In light of the notion of presence in Júlio Castañon Guimarães (2010) and Edoardo Costadura (1998), we were able to pinpoint a wide array of texts and images referring to Cocteau in the pages of Brazilian periodicals, which came to reflect the diverse areas of activity of this author and the interest of the Brazilian public in the complexities of a foreign personality devoted to exhibition. Greater focus was given, here, to the homoerotic aspect of his creations and to the translations of his works into Brazilian Portuguese. The main source of this documental research was based on the collection of the Hemeroteca da Biblioteca Nacional Digital (HBND) [Newspaper Library of the National Digital Library], from which other sources were found and were, then, used according to their pertinence. The presentation of the selected data was made on a decade-by-decade basis, establishing historical periods corresponding to what could be deemed as a series of phases of the poet and revealing certain changes to the Brazilian perception of Jean Cocteau within each period
